Déjà Vu

By Alden L. Benton

“It’s like déjà vu all over again.”  ~ Yogi Berra

On November 4, 1979, Iranian protestors stormed the United States Embassy in Tehran, Iran, and took 53 Americans hostage for 444 days.  President Jimmy Carter was clueless and ineffective.

Six months after the embassy was seized, Carter launched an ill-fated rescue raid that resulted in the death of eight American servicemen and one Iranian civilian.  Iran released the American hostages January 20, 1981, the moment Ronald Reagan was inaugurated as president.

Fast-forward to September 11, 2012.  As America is remembering the heinous attacks on the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and United Flight 93, “protestors” storm the U.S. Embassy in Cairo, tear down the U. S. flag, and replace it with an Islamic battle flag.

At the same time, an assault with rockets and other military-grade weapons was launched against the United States Consulate in Benghazi, Libya, that killed Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens and three other Americans.

The official response to these atrocities?  An apology!

The official response of the United States of America to attacks on sovereign soil and the murder of four Americans is an apology for upsetting the barbarians who have hijacked Islam over some obscure YouTube video that is allegedly unkind or disrespectful to their faith.

The United States Embassy in Cairo, Egypt, released this statement:

“The Embassy of the United States in Cairo condemns the continuing efforts by misguided individuals to hurt the religious feelings of Muslims – as we condemn efforts to offend believers of all religions.  Today, the 11th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the United States, Americans are honoring our patriots and those who serve our nation as the fitting response to the enemies of democracy.”  (From Business Insider)

Two incidents, 33 years apart, with two common elements: radical Islam and incompetent presidents.

President Obama actually had a chance to act presidential, but failed dismally.

The president said, “Make no mistake, justice will be done,” according to the Washington Post.  After the remark, the president hastily departed for a political fundraiser in Las Vegas, Nevada.  Apparently, funding his campaign is obviously a higher priority than an attack against or country.

The president said what he thinks we wanted to hear in a time of crisis: a cold, callous, calculated political campaign-style response.

However, the president’s words are hollow words, words from a man who callously disregards national security for political gain.  His words are hollow words from a man who spent his first year in office bowing before, and apologizing to, world leaders for our supposed sins.

Obama’s words are hollow words from a man who demeans Christians and Jews, while idolizing Muslims.  They are meaningless words from a man who sees victory in the weakening and eventual destruction of America.

At best, Obama is a weak, incompetent, America-hating ideologue.  At worst, Obama is a traitorous demagogue who gives aid and comfort, indeed encourages, those who attack and murder those who serve us.

In 1980, America replaced a weak and ineffective leader with a man of integrity and courage, a man who possessed a patriotic drive to keep America great.

It is time for déjà vu one more time in 2012.
