Government Stuck on Stupid

By Alden L. Benton

Government has grown too large and has become too expensive.  When the Left talks about things that are unsustainable, they need to look at government.  Government is not only too large and expensive, it has morphed into a self-perpetuating dysfunctional goliath that serves only itself, not its clients, and in the process, has become stuck on stupid.

Here’s just one of the recent absurdities perpetrated by government at all levels and by every branch, on the people it is supposed to serve.

In Texas, according to Fox News, a 17-year-old 11th grade honor student who works one full-time job and one part-time job to help her father support their family was sent to jail for 24 hours by a pompous, arrogant gasbag posing as a judge.

Why?  Diane Tran, a straight-A student, missed more than 10 days of school!  The judge also ordered Tran to pay a $100 fine.

Diane Tran: Straight-A honor student who was jailed because she missed more than 10 days of school. Tran, 17, has two jobs to help her father support their family.

The judge, Lanny Moriarty, said he wanted to make an example of the Tran, asking “If you let one run loose, what are you going to do with the rest of them?  Let them go, too?”

“I can understand if a child is staying out of school, running around, a bad kid, getting into trouble, taking drugs,” Mary Elliot, one of Tran’s bosses, told ABC News.  “I can understand why he would slap them into jail for 24 hours.  But Diane doesn’t do that.  All she does is work and go to school.”

Elliot says that Tran is a straight-A student, but that she sometimes oversleeps because of her hectic work schedule, and misses class.

Today, Fox News ran another, more positive story about Diane Tran’s plight.

According to Fox News,

Houston Councilman Al Hoang and others have roundly criticized the judge, saying he should have used some discretion in the honor student’s case.

“I’m going to ask the judge to expunge the record,” Hoang told FoxNews.com.  “The truancy laws should be applied case by case, and in this case it should not be applied.  I believe Judge Moriarty should have used his discretionary power to excuse her from this matter.”

Additionally, people from around the world have rallied to Tran’s cause.

Fox News reports that “Since the girl’s story went viral, hundreds of people have rallied to raise money for the teen, including one group, Louisiana Children’s Education Alliance, which said Wednesday it had raised more than $70,000 for Tran.”

The group created a website called HelpDianeTran.com and has received donations from 47 states and 13 foreign countries to help the girl.

Charlie Davis, president of Louisiana Children’s Education Alliance told Fox News “I think Diane unfortunately is at the center of two failed systems in America — our public education system and our judicial system.”

Judges are empowered to weigh the circumstances of each case before them and apply the law in a fair and just manner.  Judge Moriarty is a fool stuck on stupid.
